I never doubted that Pacman will win!

A representative from the palace quoted the state leader as saying so. Yes, I know Pacman is an excellent boxer, but he is still not Superman. He is as vulnerable as any boxer he faces on the ring. And the fact that he is facing a fellow champion doesn’t give him an outright advantage at all. Diaz is not a pre-schooler in professional boxing, so to speak.
I have nothing against Manny Pacquiao, I want to make that clear. Although, I am not actually crazy about boxing, but because I am a Filipino, I am rooting for a fellow Filipino. What I am against of are the people who are riding on Pacman’s victory, as if Manny owes his victory to them. And I am sure when he comes home, he will be paraded everywhere with political luminaries standing right beside him also waving their hands to the crowd like they were his boxing partner.
Honestly, I admired Pacquiao not because of his boxing skills, but because of his discipline and wisdom (save for his political stint). Time and again, our country has produced great boxers – world champions at that. But what do we do? We turn them into actors and politicians! Cashing in on their popularity, with the intention of earning big money in the theaters or salvaging a doomed political party. Only to be seen after ten years in a documentary television program, showing them living in a shanty house in a squatter’s area because they never thought everything would someday end.
So far, Manny has proven himself to be different. In spite of a showbiz career, he still has the discipline to keep himself fit. Unlike one I read who wasn’t able to do so, what a waste. But I still hope that they would never invite Pacquiao to join the political arena once again. Just let him be the boxer that he is and unify the country with his craft. Instead of favoring a single political party advancing personal vested interest courtesy of him. I should hope he will be wiser next time.
Like I said, I am not a boxing aficionado, but I was hoping Pacman will win and I am glad that he did. What with the recent typhoon Frank imposing his will on Philippine soil, causing deaths to hundred Filipinos, including a sea accident…, and the rising prices of oil, gasoline, electricity, rice and other basic commodities. Not to mention the unstable political situation in the country because of bickering left and right of our so-called leaders, who this early are already playing their cards for the 2010 election. Pacman brought a great relief to the Filipino people.
With Pacman’s victory, at least something good has happened to the Philippines.
