Is Manny Pacquiao an endangered specie?

That was the comment I posted in Silver’s post called: Flu to the brain, as I was referring to Mr. Lito Atienza who was part of the welcoming committee when he arrived in the country last Friday.

I can understand if Manny Pacquiao was met by a delegate or the head of the Philippine Olympic Committee, the boxing committee, hell I wouldn’t even mind if he was met by the PBA Commissioner. At least it is still connected in sports.

But the DENR Secretary?! Is Pacquiao an endangered specie really? Because I can see him being too close as if he was trying to protect Pacquiao

I have nothing personal against Mr. Atienza, in fact, I didn’t make a fuzz when he was still the mayor of Manila, because as they said, Pacquiao is an adopted son of the city. They have all the reason to be beside him. So be it.

Now, we really can’t do anything about that, do we? It was a personal gesture, being a personal friend of Pacquiao.

But guess what? Being a public servant (yes, they are that! at least supposed to be), we do have a say about it. It was after all a regular working day, for him to spend the morning with a returning champion. Even defying an order from the health department, for the opportunity to wear his floral designed polo shirt.

Of course, it wasn’t just Mr. Atienza. There are other personalities who see Pacquiao as a good springboard – to start, to launch, or to strengthen a political end.

Starting from the day of the fight itself, where we saw political advertisements in the guise of public service. With thousands of Filipinos watching the fight, there’s a captured market there – and a great name-recall for… what was their name again?

And in this Sunday’s paper, I saw a picture of Pacquiao holding a gigantic check worth P1M and with him in the picture was Manny Pangilinan…

The list doesn’t end there… it never will.

All these photo-opps, exposure thing and what-have-you is not really surprising, because the champ himself has political ambitions, and he is not timid in admitting it.

Even if many people are against his plan, this blogger included, we really can’t do anything about. It is his rights to run for public office if he wants to. The only thing we can do, is to not vote for him. Of course, the counting and tallying of votes is another thing.

And with him entering the politics… Manny Pacquiao might really become an endangered specie.
