Since the announcement that Malacañang received an invitation from the White House, many congressmen have been jostling to be included in the entourage of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on her July 30 meeting with US President Barack Obama in Washington.

Reports said that no less 100 congressmen, or nearly 40 percent of the total membership of the House of Representatives, have sent requests. Some of them have earlier signed up for Arroyo’s Egypt trip but cancelled their bookings later, in the hope that they would be included in the White House trip.

I really don’t understand why they have to tag along… on what purpose? Just to shake hands with Obama? Would President Arroyo be lost in Washington DC if she travelled by her lonesome? And whose money would these lawmakers spend on the trip? Taxpayers’ money, of course.

How ironic that some congressmen question the president’s too frequent trips lately, yet they fail to see their colleagues who tag along with her on her trips. And the July 30 trip by the way is a day that Congress should be in session. A Congress that just resumed session after a two-month break.

Though not really a supporter of the president (in spite of being a fellow Cabalen), but it’s a meeting of the presidents, so let’s give it to her. But for congressmen to go with her?

Why?
