Based on what I understand from the Wikipedia page, mesothelioma cancer is almost always associated with exposure to asbestos. The article says that most people who develop the disease have been exposed, and perhaps inhaled asbestos dust and fibers. Even people who wash clothes of a family member working with asbestos is at risk of being exposed to mesothelioma.

Unlike lung cancer, mesothelioma prognosis is not associated with smoking, however, the article states that smoking greatly increases the risk of other induced-cancer. Shortness of breath, chest wall pains, and weight loss, are just some of the symptoms of the disease.

I know, there is more a lot to learn about this disease. I am not sure about my friend’s father’s job, but I know he used to work in some industrial site in middle east.
